Variation XXI (string quartet) is for any four string instruments and live electronic processing. The quartet plays sustained tones while a computer records and plays random samples of the live quartet sound. Phasing between the live players and their sampled sound produces rhythms in subtle timbral and spatial variation proportional to the durations of the sustained tones.
