Variation XXIV
for sustaining instruments and moving microphones
live recording performed by New Music Collective, Receiver Festival, Charleston, SC
Variation XXIV is for three performers, three microphones, and live electronic processing. Three independent instances of a computer sampling process are implemented simultaneously, one for each microphone input. Between each section, performers switch microphones by rotating seats. As the performers switch microphones, the sampling memories accumulate sound from each of the three instruments. Acoustic interference (constructive an destructive phasing) between the live sustained tones and samples playback is produced by the differences and overlap in spectra between the instrumental timbres.
