collection of songs for mixed ensemble made using custom machine learning software
I am fascinated by the idea that machine listening technology is an opportunity to hear the world differently. For the past six years, I have explored this suspicion by translating machine listening analyses of pop songs into music notation and asking human musicians to re-perform the results. The transcriptions are impossibly over-specific, microtonal, and brimming with artifacts of the machine listening process. I formed a dedicated ensemble — the Happy Valley Band — to play the idiosyncratic machine-made music. Please see my blog post Making music through machine ears (the quick explanation) and liner notes Decomposing Music (the long explanation) for details.
